The dynamics of military workplaces reflected official War Department policies, white officers’ priorities, and enlisted men’s individual personalities and personal relationships. No unit was the same for all who were part of it. Yet, in general, Black seamen and the soldiers of the 54th and 55th Infantry and 5th Cavalry Regiments returned to Boston having labored under conditions that were significantly different from those of their white counterparts. At the same time, the service created and solidified bonds among Black men who had come together from all over the country and from many backgrounds. Most took from their experience of military work not one single truth, but multiple lessons as complex and contradictory as life itself.
